Saturday DNA! was developed by our educational and scientific staff to serve children, teens, and adults interested in DNA programs outside of the school setting. We offer a variety of 2-hour laboratory- and computer-based sessions.

NEW SCHEDULE! One session is offered for each Saturday in this newsletter. The October and December sessions are for students ages 10-13 with an accompanying chaperone. The November session is appropriate for ages 14 to adult, with accompanying chaperone for participants under 15. All sessions are two hours long: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Chaperones fully participate in all program activities.

Sessions are $15.00 per person ($30.00 for a participating student and accompanying chaperone.)

• Read through the descriptions of the activities BELOW, and decide which sessions you might like to attend.
• You must read and follow the instructions on the Reservation Guidelines. Applications not adhering to these guidelines will be returned.

GMO IQ

Ages 14-adult, chaperone for participants under the age of 15

GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are increasingly available as food in our markets, but what are they? Are they safe? Are they nutritious? How can we know what food is genetically modified, and what is not? Learn about genetically modified organisms, how we can detect them, and the science behind how genetic modification works.

In this session participants will:
· use biotechnology to identify GMO foods;
· learn the USDA standards on GMO; and
· gain insight into modern plant biotechnology.

Ages 10 -13, with chaperone

Mysterious bones that appear to be human are discovered in the woods near Cold Spring Harbor. Come join the DNALC’s Saturday DNA CSI team to investigate the case and simulate the work of forensic anthropologists as we attempt to unravel the mystery of a missing person.

In this lab session, participants will:
· help uncover bones and use forensic techniques to discover the gender, age, and height of the person; and
· try and identify the body using a missing person’s catalog.
